I think they also started putting small hatchets or axes aboard the Horsas in order to manually separate tails or open hatches in case a hard landing jammed them shut.
Yes they did - apparently the explosives attached the tail went off in flight one time. I saw a reference to that being the point they went to the easily removed nuts to release the tail section. They also had cable cutters so the cable could be cut. The axe would definitely be useful!
